Hohenwerfen Castle

Experience the Middle Ages

Hohenwerfen Castle

Hohenwerfen Castle is a medieval castle situated next to the town Werfen on a rocky hill of 623 meters high. It is the smaller ‘sister’ of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. You can reach the castle with a lift or via a walking path. It is approximately 40 km south of Salzburg. The main attractions at the castle are the guided tour and the bird show. The historic Falconry Centre offers daily flight demonstrations with birds of prey like falcons, eagles, and vultures.

The guided tour is included in the ticket price. The guide, who is dressed in a medieval costume, shows you around in the castle. You will visit the chapel, the torture chamber, the dungeon, the royal apartment, and the bell tower. The guide speaks German, but you can have an audio tour with the following languages: EN/IT/FR/NL/CS/ES/RU/HU/DA/HE/AR/SE/PL.

There are many activities and games for children at the castle and there is a special audio tour for kids.

How to get there

Public transport:

From Salzburg, you can take the train to Werfen, the S3, or the REX. You can buy a train ticket at the train station.

It will take about 30 minutes to walk from the train station in Werfen to the castle. Then you can decide if you go up with the funicular or by foot.

Parking is in front of the entrance where the funicular and the hiking trail starts.
